Hello all,
I just thought I would introduce myself, my name is Kevin and I’m from South Carolina.
I just acquired an 1888 rod bayonet trapdoor Springfield. I haven’t received it yet but it is on the way. As soon as it arrives I will post pics for everyone to enjoy. I do however have the serial number and was wondering if it could be researched? It is 523119. I appreciate any information.
Thank you all, I’m looking forward to my time here!

Kevin

According to “Ernst and Waite”, it was produced in the third quarter (July-Sept.) 1891, one of 6,520 RRBs’ made that quarter.

There is no documented history for 523119 to show when/where ti might have been used.

Many of the 1888 rod bayonet rifles were used in the Spanish American War by volunteer units.
A few states did apply unit marks, mostly New York which often had nearly applied large and small numbers on the right side of the butt.

Bur, most will remain anonymous unless documentation has been found.
