So my 1870 breechblock dated 40k serial range trapdoor has the ladder with slide rear sight. Looked at an old timer's 50/70 fleetingly for sale and it has the flip musket type sight a little further up on the barrel. Would that be an M68 version ?. I forgot breechblock date and serial. He is asking $1200 - metal gorgeous but stock kinda worn smooth with no cartouches visible. I'm thinking I can get $200 knocked off in haggling. But not sure it's worth that still. Don't know , but I do know I love them !.

If it's a single-digit 1868 date, I'd look further into buying it. We know that #6 has a musket sight, but it is inletted slightly into the nose of the receiver. If the side numbers do not match, or if the barrel lacks one, I'd pass for sure. Almost 99.9% sure it's a Bannerman/Bubba...

I never thought of a bannerman bitser !. The musket sight is over an inch from the receiver !. Must be like the one my buddy has that has no serial on the barrel and a musket sight too !!!. Learn something new everyday !. I see it again I will look it over better.

Guns sighted like that do turn up. Many years ago, a VERY VERY well-known authority in another genre told me that he too had an 1870 carbine. Considering his knowledge of frontier firearms I was expecting something great, but it turned out to have a long receiver, no barrel number, and a musket sight located midway between the receiver and the band. I managed to choke out "Oh yes, that's very nice. Don't see them very often" and stumble away, practically in shock...
