Re: Hunting knife
I had noticed that, too. I'd love to have a correct, belt loop scabbard, but that one certainly is wanky. At first I thought it was one of the repros sold by What Price Glory. After looking at it more closely, I think it was converted from one of the longer Hospital Corps knife scabbards by trimming back the length of it. You can see the curve of the edges of the scabbard just isn't right and the stitching isn't correct either. By the way, those unit marking stamps are from a WW1 period, italic, equipment marking set, not a proper set used during the Indian War period.
Re: Hunting knife
Thank you for the information, I saw that on eBay the other day.

Re: Hunting knife
Pretty nice knife - but the classic whack on an 1887 scabbard - one of the pics clearly shows the old straight stitching...
That said, I almost wonder if it is a legitimate "late service" repair/repurpose? The work does NOT look fresh, and seller has a good reputation. He also accepts returns, so, it kinda boils down to whether you'll accept a compromise. Completely genuine ones can be had, if you look around, and pay more....

Re: Hunting knife
Now that I look at it more closely, I see your point. That does NOT look like SA numbering, AND the area appears to have been diddled with!
I've not seen such a perfect point before and the milling of the blade at the hilt seems just a hair off to my eye.
Believe I'd pass, yet someone just kicked the price up $60 - hope they read this...
Still grappling with which iron guard to keep, have a really nice one with a big chip out of the blade, which came with a Varney scabbard, and a rather worn one which has no glaring issues, just WELL used. Decisions, decisions ...

Re: Hunting knife
Quite a few bidders on that one and there's lots of days left before it ends. The numbers look to be way off along with the front.
I have a really nice iron guard knife which I purchased from all some time ago Dick. It has an excellent Varney scabbard which still has the locking tab, most are missing that.
It does have a couple small chips in the blade and handle but for the price paid you can't beat it.
Serial number 61, purchased it to go with my triangular bayonet rifle.
