Re: Trapdoor carbine/RB carbine....
Correction on the fate of the M1867 USN carbines. Ed Hull's magnificent anthology of his superb articles has a section dealing with 1867 USN carbines. INCLUDING details of the disposition of them. Of the 5,000 initially made some 1,700+ were broken down, with the barrels ending up on the surplus mar...

Re: Trapdoor carbine/RB carbine....
Most of the USN Model 1867 .50-45 rolling block carbines were bought by the surplus guys (SH&G or someone) and they had a customer who wanted some rolling blocks in some other caliber (.43 Spanish??) so they pulled the bbls and forends from the USN carbines, fitted new bbls and forends and sold ...

Ed Hull Books- how to order
Friends- Just a reminder (from a very satisfied customer who has Volume 2 and just ordered Volumes 1 and 3): Ed Hull's research and writing are superb, but his info has been buried in out of print periodicals, nearly impossible to access. Ed has spiffed them up a bit and published them in three vol...

Nickel (?) plating removal?
Recently picked up one of the 1000 Model 1870 Springfield trials rolling block rifles (not the Navy M1870 or Army M1871, but the slightly different M1870 trials model). Unfortunately it has remnants of a very thin period nickel plating, or possibly tinned plating probably done for a GAR post or some...

Re: Springfield Trapdoor Collection has Grown
A nice collection! While none of those have any proven history of USMC usage, M1884 serial number 434153 is listed in SRS as used by CO M 3RD TEXAS VOL INF in 1898! Congratulations! The 3rd Texas Volunteer Infantry did not see service outside the U.S., but instead ended up manning coastal fortificat...

Tony- Thanks.
You "don't post a lot" but you certainly are welcome and encouraged to share your thoughts. A picture and a paragraph on anything trapdoor era would be great to share.
We don't grade on English or photo skills here!

Ammo for Long Range rifles (.45- 2.4 inch case or .45-80)
Picked this up at the Colorado Gun Collector Assn show in Greeley, CO a couple weeks ago. Markings are really faded and hard to read, but a really scarce crate. Any .45-70 era crate is scarce, and I've only seen maybe a dozen in my life time. This one is for the "Model 1881" Cartridges wit...

Thank You to Don Harpold
Friends- I just wanted to tell everyone how much I appreciate the work that Don Harpold (".45 Govt") does for this site. You won't see it, but there is a lot of busy work behind the scenes to approve new posters and kill spam posts. Not real high tech, not real time consuming, but just eno...
